Center for Leadership Learning Programs

Student Affairs and the Office of the Vice Provost - Undergraduate Studies provides complementary leadership programs that support a leadership initiative that joins academic inquiry and Student Affairs resources in unique ways, resulting in a coordinated effort that will help students identify and develop abilities that are essential for effective citizenship, advocacy, and professional & leadership development.

Student Leadership Development Series

The Student Leadership Development Series (SLDS) is an integrated program designed to help students identify and develop abilities that are essential for effective citizenship, advocacy, and leadership. Student Affairs and the Office of the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies have made a commitment to provide student with leadership education opportunities that support the academic Contemporary Leadership Minor. SLDS provides hands-on, interactive experiences that parallel the themes presented in the Contemporary Leadership Minor. Students can participate in the SLDS program, pursue the Contemporary Leadership Minor or simply enjoy the leadership topics and experiences! Either way, students will learn new skills and become more informed about leadership. Students who participate in SLDS will build a Leadership record, which they may use with job, internship or graduate school applications. Students who complete the requirements outlined below will receive a Certificate of Completion signed by the Vice Provost –Undergraduate Studies, the Assistant Vice Chancellor - Student Affairs and the Chancellor.

Contemporary Leadership Minor

At the center of this initiative is a minor in Contemporary Leadership, approved by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. In the minor, a combination of coursework, practical experience, and capstone activities converge to promote self-understanding, a robust ethical framework, the ability to understand and negotiate inter-cultural dynamics, and a thorough understanding of organizations and social change. Cohesive but flexible, the minor offers all participants a common core of knowledge through a required four-unit course (currently under review by the Academic Senate) and the ability to select specific courses and experiential activities (i.e., internships, research, and projects) in keeping with individual interests.
