Independent and Small - Group Study

Students can become involved in research projects on a variety of topics by enrolling in courses designated as Special Study Courses or by designing a special project on their own under the direction of a faculty sponsor.

Internship and Career Center (ICC)
It is possible to get academic credit for internships through academic departments and being enrolled in the 92 (for lower division students) or 192 courses (for upper division students). For more information visit the Internship and Career Center Web site.

Independent Study Program (ISP)
An ISP Project allows upper-division students the opportunity to design and pursue a special project of scholarly effort for a full quarter (12-15 units). A program qualifying as Independent Study will consist of one or more courses in the 190 - 199 series. It is undertaken under the direction of a faculty sponsor or panel. Research Conference Courses (190C)
Advanced undergraduate students may participate in critical discussions of department research activities in Research Conference courses numbered 190C. These one-unit courses are graded on a Passed/Not Passed basis.

Undergraduate Research (Special Study Courses)
Faculty at UC Davis conduct research on a wide variety of topics across every discipline. During a normal quarter course load, UC Davis students can become involved in research projects for at least one quarter or more. They can enroll in special study courses numbered 99 (lower-division students) and 199 (upper-division students). Upper division students may also take 194H (an honors course), which may have departmental prerequisites. Students should contact the faculty member whose research interests them in order to decide on a project, time commitment, the number of units and the appropriate course to enroll in. These courses are offered for variable units (the number of units determined by the time involved) on a Passed/Not Passed basis.
