Publishing Opportunities

Students are invited to submit their manuscripts to journals that are specifically targeted for undergraduate researchers.

Why Would I Want to Publish?
For undergraduate students who are considering pursuing Master's or Ph.D. degrees, publishing is impressive for graduate school applications and is also an essential skill to develop in academia. An undergraduate research journal or literary magazine is a great start for your first publication.

Some of the following publishing opportunities on the UC Davis campus are produced by student groups, departments and scholarship groups. These opportunities include the following:

Explorations is a Journal of Undergraduate Research, published by the Office of the Vice Provost – Undergraduate Studies. The journal only publishes essays submitted by UC Davis undergraduate students from all disciplines. The annual deadline for manuscript submissions is in May. For more information visit the Office of the Vice Provost – Undergraduate Studies Web site.

Prized Writing is sponsored by the University Writing Program. They also run a concurrent competition for cover art. Prized Writing is sold in the campus bookstore and used in various General Education courses. Their annual deadline for submissions is also mid-June, and complete rules and entry forms are available on the Prized Writing Web site.

Chilam Balam is an art and literary journal produced by undergraduates, from all different backgrounds, that aims to promote visual arts, multi-lingual and multi-cultural undergraduates and community submissions.

McNair Scholars Research Journal is a publication of the McNair Scholars Program, a program dedicated to preparing talented undergraduates from disadvantaged backgrounds for doctoral studies. For more information about the publication and program see the McNair Scholars Program Web site.

Seele is an undergraduate literary magazine that publishes an annual collection of prose and poetry written by University of California, Davis, across academic disciplines. The collection is selected by students at UC Davis. For more information visit the Seele Web site.

The Voice, UC Davis Undergraduate Health Journal is an undergraduate medical journal that publishes short health-related articles written for a general audience. For more information contact The Voice.

The International Affairs Journal (IAJ) at UC Davis is a multidisciplinary journal comprised of articles from both undergraduate and graduate students. It aims to stimulate interest, discussion, and analysis in the domain of international politics, business, and cultures by providing a forum for students both to publish their ideas and to reflect upon those from the greater collegiate community. For more information, please visit IAJ online.
